CRP 111 - INTRODUCTION TO CITY PLANNING

COURSE CONTENT

During 14-week lectures evolution history of mankind described by the process of built environment and building technology. The terms city and civilization are examined through the basic settlement patterns beginning from the prehistoric ages and covers the Antique Period, Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. History of Ottoman settlements will follow the Seljuk, Andalusian and Abbasid settlements of the Middle Ages .The aim of the course is to discuss the urban space concept related to the civilization level of the societies through the chosen example settlements.

AIM

This course is designed to give an overall view on the evolution of settlements of the past in relation with space composition, time and social characteristics since the Paleolithic Age until the Industrial Revolution.  Scrutinizing the concept of settlements, cities and civilization in Europe, Middle East and Anatolia with necessary links to Asia and America composes the basis.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Analyze an overall view of the development of the built environment 
  2. Detect the evolution of human thought reflected on the physical settlements,
  3. Develop a concise idea on the spatial composition of different cultures under similar conditions
  4. Develop hints for future from past design experiences

REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION POLICY

Students of the course will be evaluated with reference to the following tasks:

  • Participation (10%)
  • Term Papers, Assignments (20%)
  • Midterm Exam (30%)
  • Final Exam (40%)
